GOOSE CREEK, S.C.–Two people who died following a murder-suicide at a Goose Creek home Tuesday afternoon have been identified.
On Tuesday, around at 1:30 p.m., the Berkeley County Coroner’s Office received a call of a death at 433 Sarah Drive in the City of Goose Creek.
Once on scene, Coroner Bill Salisbury found 50-year-old Deborah Rogers lying in her bed with a laceration to her neck. She was pronounced dead on the scene.
Salisbury stated that police initially came to the home for a well fair check and encountered 38-year-old Alex Schaffer, another resident of that address.
“Before the police entered the home, Schaffer attempted suicide,” stated Salisbury. “He was transported by EMS to Trident Hospital where he died at 2:36 a.m.”
According to Major John Grainger with Goose Creek Police, his department requested the assistance of SLED after officers became physically involved in trying to restrain Schaffer.
“Schaffer had inflicted serious injuries to his own neck outside the presence of officers and continued inflicting injury to his own neck in the presence of officers,” stated Grainger.
After multiple Taser stun attempts, officers were able to bring Shaffer under control and provide first aid until EMS transported him to Trident, police stated.
“We have no record of prior incidents or disputes between Mr. Schaffer and Ms. Rogers,” stated Grainger.
Grainger says Rogers and Schaffer lived together; however, the nature of their relationship and any relevant history leading to Tuesday’s incident remains part of the ongoing investigation.
None of the officers involved in the incident were injured.
