BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–The substance the shut down the courthouse on California Avenue Tuesday and sent several people to this hospital has tested positive for heroin, according to Berkeley County officials.
“The building was evacuated out of an abundance of caution,” stated Chief Deputy Mike Cochran with the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office.
More than five people were transported to a nearby hospital after coming in contact with the drug.
“It is believed the substance was inhaled and/or ingested by three individuals in the holding cell,” Michael Mule with Berkeley County government told Live 5 News. “When the guard approached the cell, the individual or individuals attempted to flush the substance.”
Officials say that’s when the drug went airborne and EMS crews became symptomatic. Fortunately, the first responders are now doing okay.
The courthouse was evacuated around 2 p.m. and closed for the rest of the day.
It will, however, resume normal operations Wednesday morning and will open at 9:00 a.m.
