Former Detention Officer Charged With Assault And Battery

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–A former Berkeley County corrections officer has been arrested and charged with assault and battery 3^rd degree, a misdemeanor.

According to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, on September 14, 2014 while working at the Hill-Finklea Detention Center, Devin Leann Lopez, 37, struck an inmate in the groin area with her hand as she supervised him cleaning his cell.

Lopez has been booked into the Hill-Finklea Detention Center in Moncks Corner.

The case was investigated by SLED at the request of the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office.

The case will be prosecuted by the Ninth Circuit Solicitor’s Office.

If convicted, Lopez could face a fine of up to $500, up to 30 days in prison or both.
