Suspect Charged in Old Piggly Wiggly Warehouse Shooting

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–One person has been charged with attempted murder following an altercation at the old Piggly Wiggly warehouse in Jedburg.

On Tuesday afternoon, deputies with the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a shooting with a victim at 1145 Newton Way. Once there, they found a male subject that had been shot in the shoulder.

The victim reported that he and Melvin Shaquille Hayne work for the business located there and that they had been arguing just prior to the event.

At some point during the argument, the victim stated that Melvin Hayne pulled out a black in color pistol and attempted to pistol whip him with it. The victim blocked the strike and a physical altercation ensued. During the fight, the victim was shot once in the shoulder by Hayne.

The victim was transported to Trident Hospital for treatment where he was treated and released.

The investigation resulted in the arrest of Melvin Shaquille Haynes for Attempted Murder. He was taken into custody mid-day on January 23rd and he is being housed at the Hill Finklea Detention Center pending a bond hearing and warrant service.
