Drowning Victim from Cypress Gardens Boat Landing Identified

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–The body of a fisherman recovered near the Cypress Gardens Boat Landing has now been identified.

On Sunday, Feb. 18, at 8:55 a.m. 46-year-old Lonnie East IV of Goose Creek was fishing in a rice field near Bonneau Ferry off the Cooper River when he fell from his boat, according to Berkeley County Coroner Bill Salisbury.

Nearby fishermen witnessed the accident and tried to save him but were unsuccessful.  They called 911 and the Sheriff’s Office, DNR, and several fire departments responded.

Diver’s from Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team recovered the body at 4:05 p.m.

Coroner Salisbury has ruled the death as accidental.
