Deputies: Pastor Tries to Help Stranded Motorist, Becomes Target of Armed Robbery

ST. STEPHEN, S.C.–A Berkeley County pastor tried to help a stranded motorist who then tried to rob him, according to the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office.

On the morning of Sunday, February 25th deputies responded to a report of a strong-armed robbery at the Saint Mary’s Holiness Church in Saint Stephen.

Deputies say that before church service, one of the pastors observed a man changing a tire out front of the church.

The pastor went to help the stranded motorist change the tire when the stranded motorist grabbed the pastor and threw him to the ground and then attempted to steal his wallet, deputies stated.

Witnessing the assault, several parishioners rushed to the aid of their pastor.

The suspect fled on foot and attempted to get a ride.

St. Stephens’ police located and detained the suspect pending identification.

Once a positive identification had been made, deputies arrested Hector Gibbs, Jr. of Orchid Avenue in Charleston.

Gibbs was transported to the Hill Finklea Detention Center where he is facing assault and attempted armed robbery charges.
