Voters Head to the Polls in Goose Creek General Election

GOOSE CREEK, S.C.–As of Tuesday morning, voter turnout has been steady for the City of Goose Creek general election.

Around 10 a.m., lines stretched outside the door at the Marguerite H. Brown Municipal Center on  N. Goose Creek Blvd.

Longtime Mayor Michael Heitzler is facing opposition from incumbent and current city councilman, Greg Habib.

Voters will also vote for three council members.

Councilmembers Kimo Esarey and Debra Green-Fletcher are seeking re-election.  Both are supporting Habib for mayor.

Tom Keefe, Cory McClary, Christopher Harmon and Jerry Tekac are also vying for a position on city council.

Keefe has publically announced his support for Heitzler who has been the mayor of Goose Creek since 1976.

McClary and Harmon are also supporting the longtime mayor.

Tekac, meanwhile, is no stranger to politics.

He is a former Goose Creek councilman who unsuccessfully ran against the mayor in 2014.

Tekac has announced his support for Habib for mayor.

Former Goose Creek city administrator, Dennis Harmon, has also announced his support for Habib and councilmember candidates Tekac, Esarey and Green-Fletcher . Harmon retired in 2016 after serving as the city’s administrator since 1978.

For the first time in a long time, the city’s general election has gotten a little nasty.

In recent weeks, campaign signs have been removed from yards. Some constituents have attempted to generate voter fear by accusing Habib of being Muslim–which he ultimately addressed in the video below:

Meanwhile, Heitzler has accused Habib of sending out misleading flyers regarding how taxpayer money is spent. The flyer accuses the mayor of spending more than $15,000 of taxpayer money in just over four years to attend events that have no direct need to his service as mayor. In response, Heitzler recently took to Facebook with the following statement:
