Deputies: Reckless Driver Hits Side of SCHP Cruiser Transporting Prisoner

VIA BERKELEY COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–A Summerville man is behind bars after deputies with the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office say he struck the side of a trooper’s cruiser.

Isaac Manzano-Ruiz is facing multiple charges.

Shortly after midnight Tuesday morning, a SCHP Trooper transporting a prisoner was traveling north on Henry Brown Jr. Blvd. passing the Nowhere Bar & Grill.

As the fully marked SCHP cruiser was passing in the other direction, the silver Honda Accord that Ruiz was driving turned into the side of the SCHP cruiser, disabling it.

Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to investigate the cash. The investigating deputy noted an odor of burnt marijuana on Ruiz. Ruiz stated that he had one shot of liquor prior to the crash. At the time of the crash, there was an open bottle of Blue Moon in his vehicle.

Ruiz, age 25 of East Red Maple Circle in Summerville, was arrested and transported to the Hill Finklea Detention Center to undergo testing.

Deputies say he submitted a .06 Blood Alcohol Content sample. A urine sample was then collected for laboratory analysis due to determine if there were other intoxicants in his system. He was then issued citations for reckless driving, failure to yield right-of-way and Open Container before being booked into the Hill Finklea Detention Center. He was released on a PR bond after a bond hearing this morning.

Thankfully the SCHP trooper and his prisoner were not seriously injured.
