Police: Man Intentionally Set Carolina Inn Motel Room on Fire

MONCKS CORNER, S.C.–Moncks Corner Police have released new details on the recent motel fire at Carolina Inn located at 102 S. Highway 52.

Police Chief Rick Ollic confirmed Thursday that the fire was intentionally set.

On July 29, 2018, at about 10:48 p.m, officers with the Moncks Corner Police Department responded to the scene of the fire.

Upon their arrival, Ollic says they found that the subject, Antonio Smalls, had barricaded himself in a room that had been set on fire.

The Moncks Corner Fire Department extinguished the fire and Smalls was located unresponsive in the room. Smalls was transported to the hospital.

Moncks Corner Police investigators secured the room and requested special arson investigators from the State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) to the respond to further the investigation.

According to Ollic, Smalls has a history of mental issues.

He was transported to the Augusta Burn Center and is listed in critical condition.
