Longtime Jamestown Fire Chief Passes Away

JAMESTOWN, S.C. – The longest-serving fire chief in South Carolina passed away Tuesday morning. He’d been sick for some time. For 52 years, Jamestown Fire Chief David O. Shuler dedicated his life to his community as a first responder.

Last week, Shuler left Roper Hospice Cottage in Mt. Pleasant and returned home Thursday where he remained under hospice care.

Following the news of his passing, several surrounding fire departments took to social media to express their condolences to friends and family:

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the Jamestown Fire Department, family and community as they have lost a great public servant. Longtime Chief David Shuler passed away early this morning while at his home surrounded by family. He will be missed, always remembered and never forgotten!” posted the Eadytown Metro Fire Department.

“The Cross Fire Department sends out our thoughts and prayers to the Jamestown FD, family and community as they have lost a great public servant. Longtime Chief David Shuler passed away early this morning while at his home surrounded by family. He will be missed, always remembered and never forgotten!” posted the Cross Rural Fire Department.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of David Shuler, Chief of the Jamestown Fire Department after his passing earlier this morning at home. Chief Shuler was a dedicated public servant and leader. He will be missed,” posted the Berkeley County Fire Chiefs’ Association.

Funeral announcements are pending.
