Goose Creek Murder Suspect Turns Himself In: Police

GOOSE CREEK, S.C. – A man is behind bars and charged in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred inside the Woodland Lakes subdivision last week.

On July 9, at approximately 1:34 p.m., officers from the Goose Creek Police Department were dispatched to the 100 block of Sora Lane in reference to gunshots.

Upon arrival officers located an unresponsive 20-year-old man on the front porch of a residence on Sora Lane. EMS arrived and declared the victim deceased at the scene. The victim was later positively identified as Raquan Hughes. 

The Criminal Investigative Unit conducted an exhaustive investigation and through multiple leads identified the suspect as 21-year-old Jaylin Malik Charles Smalls. Multiple warrants for Smalls’ arrest were obtained.

After days of questioning friends and family of Smalls, he turned himself in to the Goose Creek Police Department Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. He was accompanied by his attorney and is now in custody.  Smalls will be taken to the Berkeley County Detention Center for booking on the charges of Murder and Possession of Weapon During Violent Crime.
