BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. –  Martin Luther King, Jr. Day will be celebrated on Jan. 18, marking the 35th year the federal holiday has honored the slain civil rights leader.

The road to approving the King holiday, however, was a long one – 32 years in the making actually. President Ronald Reagan ultimately signed a bill approving the holiday in Nov. 1983. Three years later, the first federal King holiday was celebrated. All 50 states made it a state holiday by 2000.

While some people in the county may have to work, such as police and other first responders, expect Berkeley County schools and government offices to be closed.

Here is what’s open and closed in Berkeley County on Martin Luther King Jr. Day:

  • Government offices: Closed
  • Courts: Closed
  • Berkeley County School District: Schools and offices will be closed.
  • Berkeley County Library System: All BCLS branches will be closed. No items will be due at that time.
