BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. – The Berkeley Animal Center is in need of donations to help pay for the medical care of a dog that shelter workers said was recently found with a prong collar embedded into its neck.
Prong collars are sometimes referred to as “pinch collars” and can cause bruising of the esophagus, skin or neck tissue if pet owners aren’t carefully watching their dogs.
In addition to the collar, Roc, the dog’s name, was found with a tie-out cable attached to it, according to animal center employees.
“We cannot stress the importance of using the proper equipment for containing animals. Prong collars are meant to be used as a training tool and only when a human is there to supervise,” the Berkeley Animal Center said via social media. “Roc is paying the price for a humans choice to use this type of collar with a tie out.”
Roc received urgent care at the Summerville ER Vet Clinic on Tuesday night and is now recovering at the Berkeley Animal Center, shelter staff said.
Animal shelter employees said his bill is estimated to be between $600 and $800, plus he will need to be on pain medications, antibiotics and have additional wound care for the next several weeks.
