MONCKS CORNER, S.C. – Agents with the South Carolina Law Enforcement arrested a former school resource officer with the Moncks Corner Police Department on Monday.
According to SLED, the officer is accused of having sex with a student at Berkeley High School while working there. The student was 15 years old at the time.
Zedrick Maurice Smalls, 50, has been charged with four counts of second degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor, along with one count of third degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor.
Multiple sexual encounters took place between Smalls and the student at the school between May and early June of this year, according to an affidavit.
The request for the SLED investigation was made by the Moncks Corner Police Department. On June 9, the police department confirmed that Smalls was fired after “inappropriate communication with a student was reported.” However, at the time, the department didn’t elaborate further.
Smalls was booked at the Berkeley County Detention Center. A judge denied bond Monday night.
The case will be prosecuted by the 9th Circuit Solicitor’s Office.
