BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. – An attempted traffic stop by Berkeley County deputies ended with quite the surprise.

On Wednesday, a deputy tried to pull over a vehicle around Hwy. 402 for a vehicle registration violation. However, the driver refused to stop and kept driving, according to the sheriff’s office.

Deputies said the man behind the wheel kept driving until his vehicle managed to get stuck on a wood pile. Instead of surrendering, deputies said the man took off running.

He left behind his cellphone and a bookbag, deputies said. It’s what was in the bookbag, however, that left deputies perplexed. They weren’t expecting a baby alligator to be inside of it – but it was.

With the help of S.C. Department of Natural Resources, the alligator, aka “Wally,” was safely relocated.

The driver has since been identified as Tracy Lee Crane, 48, of Melrose Place in Moncks Corner.

He’s now wanted by the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office and SCDNR.

He has active warrants for failure to stop for blue lights and sirens, driving under suspension – second offence, expired registration and possessing an alligator without a license.

Crane has an extensive arrest history. According to the sheriff’s office, he’s been booked into the Hill Finklea Detention Center nine times since 2016. Past charges include for possession of drug paraphernalia, shoplifting, breaking into a motor vehicle, possession of meth, violation of a county ordinance and failure to stop for blue lights.
