ALVIN, S.C. – A beloved member of the Alvin community – and the oldest- has passed away. Addison ‘Jack’ Greene, a World War II veteran, died Wednesday, Aug. 25 at his home. He was 100 years old.

“He lived a good life. We gave him his flowers while he could smell them. He wanted to make 100 and that he did. We celebrated him like the king he was,” said Travis Greene, his grandson, via social media.

Three months before his death, the South Carolina General Assembly issued a resolution recognizing Greene as a pillar in the Alvin community and for his “membership” into the “centenarian club.” For this special milestone birthday, his community celebrated with a parade on May 29, 2021.

Greene was born in Alvin on May 21, 1921, as the thirteenth of fourteen children, to the late Willis and Susie Greene. His father gave him the name Absalom, but it was never recorded on his birth certificate. In Jack’s youth, he helped around the farm, in the fields, and in his father’s workshop.

A veteran of the United States Army, Greene served during World War II from 1942-45 as a quartermaster. His tour of duty took him to France, Germany, and England, and he received the American Theater SV Ribbon Eamet SV Medal for Good Conduct.

In the mid 1950s, Jack and his late-wife, Ruby Moultrie Greene, started a family business selling barbecue. People traveled from many miles away just to get a taste of their famous BBQ sauce, RubyJack. He ultimately passed down the business to his grandson Travis, whom Jack had raised as his own.
