BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. – The Berkeley County Sheriff Office has arrested a woman after deputies said she supplied inmates with contraband.

Misty Dawn Lee, 36, of Summerville has been charged with furnishing contraband.

Deputies said an investigation began after detention center staff received tips that a medical staff member was supplying an inmate with contraband. This resulted in searches of the inmates and their cells.

According to the sheriff’s office, during a search, an inmate attempted to conceal and destroy the contraband, but it was recovered and placed into evidence. The contraband in question was tobacco.

Deputies said they interviewed the inmate who admitted that Lee was bringing him cigarettes, a vape marijuana pen and lighters.

The investigation continued and detention center staff were able to determine Lee would be bringing in contraband on Nov.19, deputies said.

On that date, deputies said Lee did bring in one lighter and two cigarettes to the inmate. Lee was then placed under
arrest.

“Lee is not and was never an employee of Berkeley County government,” the sheriff’s office said in a news release. “She was an employee of Wellpath. Wellpath is a medical contractor that services Hill-Finklea Detention Center.”

The case remains under investigation.
