Goose Creek Police To Continue Childens’ Early Drug Education Program

GOOSE CREEK, S.C. – In an effort to prevent the use and abuse of drugs among young people, Goose Creek Police Chief LJ Roscoe announced Tuesday the continuation of the department’s Safetypup® – Child Safety and Drug Education programs.

The National Child Safety Council, a federal tax-exempt organization, is the creator and designer of the materials.

The program reaches kindergarten through fifth grade, and gives the youngsters accurate and vital, facts and information about drugs, while teaching in a nonthreatening way. The materials allow the children to learn safe living, while having fun with the games, pictures, puzzles, riddles, rhymes, and songs throughout the manuals. The diversified materials insure that as the children grow, they learn different safety or drug messages.

Safetypup® is the national mascot for the council. The Safety Hero first appeared on ½ pint milk cartons and Missing Children milk cartons in 1985.

“In the early drug education program, we teach the youngsters the importance of not putting anything into their bodies that could harm them.” Chief Roscoe explained.

“The children also learn they are “special” and “unique.” No one looks, talks, walks, laughs, or cries just the way they do. No one has the same smile, hair, eyes, or personality. No one will ever be “just” like you and being different is okay. In fact, the children learn to celebrate their differences, and learn how to make their own choices. We teach them how to make positive choices. The consequence of a good choice is much different from those when we make a bad choice,” Roscoe continued.

The chief said the program would reach approximately 1,000 children. During the classroom visits and community events, we will distribute more than 4,950 pieces of material.

“Other programs like the Safetypup® program are available to our department. However, I feel the council has the best materials available, and the cost per child is the lowest we have found,” the chief stated.

Contributions to the program stay within the Goose Creek area and are tax deductible by the IRS. The police department is currently mailing letters throughout the Goose Creek area to our local businesses, industrial, and financial leaders.

The program is also supported by local military and fraternal organizations. We appreciate the support our community leaders have given our program over the past years. Without their much-needed help, our program would not be successful.

“The contributions received reflect the sincere dedication to the safety of our youth,” the chief continued.
