GOOSE CREEK, S.C. – A man is in jail accused of trying to kill a Goose Creek police officer, according to the Goose Creek Police Department.
Just before 8 p.m. Wednesday, an off-duty Goose Creek officer arrived home in the Woodside Manor neighborhood near Ladson.
Police said the officer had just arrived, in his marked police vehicle, when the driver of a passing vehicle fired toward his home.
There were three other people standing near the officer, in the front yard, when the shooting occurred. A white sedan drove away from the officer’s home.
Police said the officer immediately called in the shooting. Other Goose Creek officers, monitoring the radio, heard the call and responded to the officer’s home. Charleston County Sheriff’s Office also responded and took over the investigation.
Goose Creek police began searching the immediate neighborhood.
Officers said they located a white sedan, matching the description of the one in front of the officer’s home, was found parked in the neighborhood. A suspect, matching the description of a person walking away from the parked vehicle, was also located in the area. The suspect was initially arrested for providing false information to police officers.
Police said the suspect was ultimately identified as 26-year-old Trevon Tyrek Belton. On Thursday the additional charges of four counts of attempted murder and possession of a firearm in a violent crime have been added. Belton is expected to have a bond hearing tonight.
The Goose Creek police officer and the three other victims were not injured in the shooting. The officer and his family have relocated due to this incident, the police department said.
