BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. – The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office is requesting the public’s assistance in an attempt to identify skeletal remains that were discovered in 1977.

On Oct. 4, 1977, deputies said skeletal remains were discovered by a worker clearing brush at a location that was previously known as Tidewater Builders Inc., off of Highway 52 in Goose Creek. The current address to that location is now 122 Sawgrass Avenue in Goose Creek.

At the time of the discovery of the skeletal remains, Coroner George Murray responded to the scene and recovered the remains and transferred them to the Medical University of South Carolina for analysis.

On June 8, 2020, the remains were transferred to the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office and a death investigation was opened in an attempt to identify the person and determine if a crime was committed.

“We are asking the public to please take a look at these photographs of the facial reconstruction to see if you might know who this individual could be.” Berkeley County Sheriff Duane Lewis said. “We would like to get in contact with the next of kin of this victim so they can have their remains laid to rest, properly.”

The remains were recently transferred to the University of North Texas Center for Human Identification Forensic Anthropology for further analysis.
