BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. – With the June 14 primary looming, The Berkeley Observer is profiling candidates seeking political office throughout Berkeley County.

To be featured, candidates can answer a series of questions provided by The Berkeley Observer.

Thursday’s feature includes an interview with Danny Mazzell, a Republican who is currently running for Berkeley County coroner.

Here is why Mazzell says he is the best candidate for the job:

1. What position are you running for, and why are you running?

I am running for Berkeley County Coroner – I’m excited for the opportunity to serve Berkeley County in this capacity, and if elected, I hope to bring compassionate care to the citizens of Berkeley County, further establish relationships with local law enforcement agencies, and keep an open, honest line of communication with the public.

2. Why are you the better candidate for the job?

I believe I am the best candidate for this position because I have in-depth investigative experience – I have worked undercover in narcotics, investigated violent crimes & overdose death cases, and I’m familiar with policies and procedures pertaining to law enforcement investigations. I have the experience to finalize and complete an investigation leading up to criminal charges and possible prosecution. The required experience for Coroner is either having a medical background, prior law enforcement experience and a graduate of a state academy or being a former deputy coroner. I am qualified for this position. I have nearly two decades of law enforcement experience to bring to the table. I’m a working man, and I will be a working coroner.

3. What experience do you bring to the table?

I am a fully certified law enforcement (LE 1) officer and graduate of the South Carolina Justice Academy.

In addition to my law enforcement experience, I have also served as a United States Marine, Nationally Certified Firefighter, and a member of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) task force. I’ve completed extensive and specialized trainings, to include but not limited to: Federal Internal Affairs Investigations Training Course, Internal Money Laundering Investigation Class, Sexual Assault Response & Investigations of Adult Victims, Interview and Interrogation Training Course, ROCIC Narcotics Trafficking & Trends Conference, and so much more. You can visit my website, Facebook page or send me an email to learn more.

4. Are there any issues that you believe the position you are seeking should address?

Yes, I believe there are a few things we can address:

– Additional deputy coroners to better assist the citizens of this county.

– Start a reserve deputy program which will help save taxpayer dollars because they are on a volunteer status & help with additional assistance needed in the office. This would also help with the overall budget.

– Investigate cases more thoroughly to investigate cause & manner of death more effectively.

– Assist law enforcement with overdose death cases which may lead to prosecution through the DEA.

5. What is your educational background?

I am a graduate of Stratford High School and attended two years of college at the University of South Carolina. I have over 1235 documented hours of training through the SC Justice Academy taking advanced courses. I graduated from the SC Fire Academy, Federal Bureau of Prisons Academy, and South Carolina Justice Academy.

6. If elected, what can constituents expect from you?

Honesty, integrity, transparency & always willing to work with my team – I’m a working man and will be a working coroner.

Constituents can expect to see me out working cases, being involved in the community, and following up with families after deaths in-person and through phone calls to ensure that they are comforted during their grieving process.

7. Is there anything else you’d like to mention?

Running for Coroner has been a goal since I joined law enforcement in 2003, and I have always wanted to serve my community in this capacity. I believe we need a coroner who can bring compassionate care to our community.
