BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. – A GoFundMe page has been created to help pay for the funeral expenses of a young man killed in an apartment shooting Friday night.

According to the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office, just before 8 p.m., deputies received a call in reference to a shooting that occurred at The Issac Apartments, which is at 195 North Creek Drive.

Deputies said the victim was shot following a fight at the apartment complex pool. It’s not clear what prompted the fight, however, friends said that Caleb Mitchell, 20, was trying to protect his youngest brother when a bullet struck him.

“He was a bright spark in this world and will be deeply missed. He died a hero,” Alexis Krapf, who created the GoFundMe page for Mitchell’s family, said.

“He was a wonderful son, brother, and friend who touched the lives of those around him. Cane Bay and the surrounding area has been shaken by the tragic death of this courageous 20-year-old,” she continued.

Friends said Mitchell graduated from Cane Bay High School in 2020 and was just beginning his adult life.

As of Sunday, the GoFundMe page has raised nearly $6,000 from 80 donors. Friends hope to raise at least $25,000 for the victim’s family.

“The Mitchell Family is absolutely devastated by Caleb’s unexpected passing and are struggling to find the funds to cover the cost of the funeral and memorial service,” she said. “The money raised will go towards Caleb’s funeral and memorial service and other expenses for the family. We want to give Caleb the memorial he deserves to honor his memory and say our last goodbyes.”
