MONCKS CORNER, S.C. – The Moncks Corner Police Department is warning residents to be aware of a rise in theft and attempted thefts from vehicles over the last few weeks.
Police said thieves committing these crimes typically target unlocked vehicles where valuables are visible from the outside and/or easily located inside the vehicle.
Thieves mainly target residential neighborhoods, moving quietly from driveway to driveway searching for unlocked vehicles, and rarely to do they use force to enter vehicles, presumably for fear of making noise and risking detection, according to police.
Police said these incidents typically occur during overnight hours and are usually not reported until the next morning when the owner realizes their vehicles or property is missing. Those common items stolen from the victim’s vehicles are cash, coins, jewelry, prescription medications, sunglasses and electronic equipment.
The Moncks Corner Police Department encourages are residents to take some basic preventative measures:
- Lock your vehicles any time you are away from it.
- Do not leave your keys, key fob or garage door openers in your vehicle
- Remove valuables. If you must keep them in your vehicle, hide them from plain view
- Park vehicles in the garage, if possible
- If parked in the driveway, leave exterior lights on if you are able.
According to MCPD, if you witness suspicious behavior, don’t confront the person. Instead, contact law enforcement immediately by dialing 911.
