BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. – The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office has charged two students after three handguns were located on the campus of Philip Simmons High School on Friday.
According to the sheriff’s office, a BCSO school resource officer received a tip that a student brought a gun to a football game the week prior. The SRO immediately notified the school administration and during the investigation, the school decided to conduct an administrative search of that student. During the search, a handgun was recovered from the student’s bookbag.
Additional information was later received that two more students also possibly had handguns in their
possession. School administration located a second student that was mentioned and upon doing the
administrative search, two more handguns were recovered from him.
That student then fled from the office where the search was being conducted and forced a school lockdown until he was apprehended.
The third student was signed out of school early that day and was not on campus. Deputies responded
to his residence and made contact with his guardian and it was determined that he did not have access
to weapons.
The two juvenile students that were found with guns on campus were charged and transported to the
South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice (SC DJJ).
One of the handguns recovered was previously reported stolen through the Summerville Police
Department.
