Mt. Pleasant Man Killed In I-526 Crash ID’d: Berkeley County Coroner

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. – The Berkeley County Coroner’s Office has identified the person killed in a three-vehicle crash that occurred on the interstate Monday night.

Coroner Darnell Hartwell said his office was contacted shortly before 10 p.m. by a local hospital in reference to a traffic fatality victim that was brought to the ER from a multiple-vehicle collision that occurred on I-526W.

The victim, identified as Jeremy Tumblin of Mt. Pleasant, was pronounced deceased at MUSC from injuries that were sustained in the accident. He was 37 years old, the coroner said.

According to the Charleston Police Department, the fatal crash occurred at 7:38 p.m. and involved three vehicles on I-526 West at the base of the Wando Bridge on Daniel Island.

Police said BMW SUV was traveling west on I-526 when it left the road and struck a tree after colliding with a Nissan van. Immediately preceding the collision with the Nissan, the BMW had been involved in a collision with a Chevrolet SUV on the Mount Pleasant side of the Wando Bridge on I-526 West.

All three vehicles were occupied solely by their respective drivers, police said. EMS transported the male driver of the BMW (Tumblin) to MUSC, where he was pronounced deceased a short time later.  The driver of the Chevrolet and the driver of the Nissan were each transported to MUSC with minor injuries.


MAIT investigators closed one lane of I-526 West at the base of the Wando Bridge while they completed their investigation. The roadway was reopened at 12:00 a.m.

This collision remains under investigation. No charges have been filed at this time, police said.
