HANAHAN, S.C. – The Hanahan Police Department announced it has promoted one of its own. Cassie Brooks has taken on the new role of assistant chief of police.

“With a passion for the city, its people, and the law enforcement profession, AC Brooks continues to stand out as a leader in our community. We are proud of her many accomplishments and are eager to watch her grow in this new role,” the police department posted to social media.

According to HPD, Brooks has 21 years of law enforcement experience, starting as a patrol officer with Hanahan in 2001. During her tenure with the city, she served as a detective, a patrol sergeant and a detective sergeant. She also served two years as a special investigator with the 9th Circuit Solicitor’s Office.

When she stepped into the role of lieutenant over administrative services and criminal investigations, city officials said she became the first-ever female member of the Hanahan Police Department command staff.

Brooks has a background that is heavily focused on cases of domestic violence, elder abuse, and violent crimes. She is a graduate of the FBI Carolina Command College, holds a degree in criminal justice, and is one of only a handful of certified forensic interviewers in South Carolina.

In 2022, Brooks led the department as acting chief of police when Chief Dennis Turner was placed in an administrative role to assist the interim city administrator. She also assisted Chief Turner in several grant writing projects, resulting in over $200,000 in grants for the Hanahan Police Department.

Brooks currently resides in Hanahan with her wife, Teresa, their young daughter, and their dogs, Hayleigh and Tucker.
