GOOSE CREEK, S.C. – The Goose Creek Police Department plans to hire additional school resource officers and purchase several patrol cruisers thanks to a state grant.

The department announced Tuesday it was awarded the 2023–24 School Resource Officer Grant in the amount of $638,770 from the South Carolina Department of Public Safety.

This will be the third consecutive year that GCPD has received this grant and increased its grant-funded positions from two to five officers, Captain James Emerson said in a news release.

The grant will fund five full-time school resource officers and allow GCPD to purchase three new patrol vehicles.

The schools to receive the additional resource officers are Carolyn Lewis School, Howe Hall AIMS Elementary and Westview Elementary School.
