Retired Police Sergeant Dies After Striking Tree In Huger

HUGER, S.C. – A retired Charleston police sergeant has died following a crash Monday night on Halfway Creek Road in Huger.

“With heavy hearts, we share the passing of retired Sergeant Michael Nick. His legacy spans four decades of dedicated service to our community, beginning in 1983 and culminating with his retirement in March 2023,” the Charleston Police Department posted to Facebook.

Nick was 69-years-old. He lived in Huger, the Berkeley County Coroner’s Office confirmed.

According to South Carolina Highway Patrol, the collision happened shortly after 9 p.m.

Trooper Nick Pye said Nick was driving a 2003 Lexus sedan traveling east on Halfway Creek Road when he drove off the right side of the road and struck a tree.

Crews with Cainhoy Fire & Rescue said when they arrived on scene they found Nick’s vehicle “into a tree with heavy damage.” He was in critical condition.

Nick was transported to a local hospital where he died from his injuries, Pye said.

According to CPD, Nick will be remembered for the countless lives he touched and his enduring commitment to his community.

“Sergeant Nick’s impact extended beyond his roles – he was a friend, mentor, and steadfast presence. His smile and support have left an indelible mark on our officers and community,” CPD posted.

The crash is under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol and Berkeley County Coroner’s Office.
