MONCKS CORNER, S.C. – For the first time in almost a decade, Moncks Corner officially has a new mayor. Thomas Hamilton, 58, was sworn in Tuesday night as the town’s newest mayor.

The political newcomer was elected mayor on Nov. 7, 2023, beating longtime mayor, Michael Lockliear. According to the South Carolina Election Commission, Hamilton beat his incumbent with 474 (54.29%) votes to 397 votes (45.37%). There were also three write-in candidates on the ballot.

After his swearing in, Hamilton thanked a packed council room and told the audience that one of his main priorities is to always be transparent.

“One thing we’re going to be doing is we’re going to be streaming our meetings, and we’ll have it on YouTube. So I don’t only want you to watch, I want you to get involved,” he said.

During his first four years in office, Hamilton said he plans to focus on preserving the Biggins Biking/Hiking trail, revitalizing Lacey Park, addressing first responders’ pay concerns and advocating for smarter growth.

In addition to Hamilton, council members David A. Dennis, Latorie L. Lloyd and James N. Law, Jr. were also sworn in Tuesday. Like Hamilton, their term runs through Jan. 2, 2028.

The growing town also has a newly elected public works commissioner, Michael A. Harrelson. He will also serve a four-year term.
