HANAHAN, S.C. โ€” The city of Hanahan has officially received a $50,000 T-Mobile Hometown Grant to help transform a vacant city-owned parcel into a permanent space for the Hanahan Farmers Market. Local officials, residents and community partners gathered Wednesday afternoon for a check presentation and celebration at the project site on Steward Street.

The funds will be used to revitalize the lot at 5920 Steward St., creating a vibrant community space aimed at enhancing local engagement, supporting small businesses and offering residents a welcoming, walkable destination in the heart of town.

โ€œWe are extremely grateful to T-Mobile for choosing Hanahan as a Hometown Grant recipient,โ€ said Mayor Christie Rainwater during the event. โ€œThis project will bring neighbors togetherโ€”face to faceโ€”to make memories, shop local and enjoy all the special moments that come with a thriving farmers market. The positive ripple effect this will have on our city is endless.โ€

Brittney Altfield, artisan bakery owner and manager of the Hanahan Farmers Market, said the grant marks a turning point for the community.

โ€œThis is more than just a grantโ€”itโ€™s an investment in Hanahanโ€™s future,โ€ Altfield said. โ€œBy strengthening the farmers market, weโ€™re building a stronger food system, supporting local producers and giving residents a place to connect, grow and thrive.โ€

Hanahan Joins Growing List of Grant Recipients

Hanahan is the latest South Carolina municipality to benefit from T-Mobileโ€™s Hometown Grants program. Since the initiative launched in 2021, the company has awarded more than $350,000 to projects in communities across the state, including Florence, Marion, Myrtle Beach and Port Royal.

Nationwide, the program funds community development projects in small towns and rural areasโ€”focused on infrastructure, technology, environment, education and moreโ€”with the goal of building stronger, more resilient communities.
