Woman ‘Cleaning Dead Birds’ Spotted Body at Short Stay: Report

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. – New details have emerged following the recovery of a man’s body that washed ashore Tuesday afternoon at Short Stay in Moncks Corner.

According to an incident report from the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office, a woman told deputies that she noticed the body while cleaning dead birds along the beach.

“Initially mistaking it for a bird from a distance, she realized it was a body when she approached and saw it face down in the water,” a portion of the report reads.

Authorities identified the deceased as John Charles Young, 70, of Moncks Corner.

Emergency personnel from the Berkeley County Fire Department recovered the body, and the Berkeley County Coroner’s Office later confirmed Young’s identity.

No visible injuries were reported in the document, and the cause of death has not yet been released. An autopsy will be conducted.

The Criminal Investigation Division of the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene and has taken over the investigation.

Short Stay is managed by Joint Base Charleston. Admission to the 55-acre recreational site is available to active duty/retired and Department of Defense personnel.
