BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. – One person was killed and another injured in a three-vehicle crash early Friday morning on Nexton Parkway in Berkeley County, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
According to SCHP Cpl. Nick Pye, the crash happened around 5:20 a.m. near Grand Boulevard and involved three vehicles. Investigators say a 2023 Honda SUV and a 2022 Chevrolet sedan were traveling west on Nexton Parkway as a 2018 Subaru SUV traveled east.
Troopers say the driver of the Chevrolet, identified as Enaj B. Vasconcellos, was attempting to flee from law enforcement and tried to pass the Honda. During that attempt, Vasconcellos crossed into the eastbound lane and struck the Subaru.
Vasconcellos was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Berkeley County Coroner’s Office. The driver of the Subaru sustained injuries in the crash and was taken to a local hospital for treatment. The driver of the Honda was not injured.
Officials have not said why Vasconcellos was fleeing from law enforcement.
Multiple agencies responded to the scene, including Pine Ridge Fire & Rescue, C & B Fire & Rescue, the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office and Berkeley County EMS.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate.
