The U.S. Geological Survey confirmed that a 2.9 magnitude earthquake struck near Ladson at 10:37 p.m., with the epicenter located near the Kings Grant subdivision off Dorchester Road in Dorchester County. It had a depth of 3.2 miles, which means the earthquake originated very shallow in the earth’s upper crust.

Other nearby places also felt tremors, specifically Summerville and Goose Creek, according to the USGS.

Some residents in Hanahan also said they heard a “boom” followed by brief “shaking.” Meanwhile, others felt the shock as far away as Columbia, the USGS reported. That’s 89 miles from the epicenter.
