Moncks Corner Police Nab Suspect in Bonnoitt Street Drive-By Shooting

Police have taken into custody a suspect wanted for firing multiple shots from a moving vehicle early Sunday morning, according to Moncks Corner Police Chief Antwan Richardson. (FILE)

MONCKS CORNER, S.C. โ€” Police have taken someone into custody for firing multiple shots from a moving vehicle early Sunday morning, according to Moncks Corner Police Chief Antwan Richardson.

The gunfire occurred around 2:40 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 8 along Bonnoitt Street, prompting an immediate response from the Moncks Corner Police Department and Berkeley County Sheriffโ€™s deputies. Officers recovered shell casings from the roadway and nearby properties and began reviewing video and audio evidence from the area.

At the time, authorities reported no injuries and no confirmed property damage.

In an update released Friday, Richardson said investigators quickly identified a suspect and, after reviewing evidence, secured an arrest warrant for discharge of a firearm within town limits.

Police determined the gunfire was an isolated incident and was not directed at any specific residents or individuals, according to the department.

Richardson condemned the reckless behavior, saying the unlawful discharge of a firearm poses a serious threat to the community.

โ€œSuch actions endanger innocent lives, disrupt the peace of our neighborhoods, and threaten the safety of our residents,โ€ Richardson said in a message to the public. โ€œAnyone who engages in this type of behavior will face firm and decisive consequences.โ€

Moncks Corner Mayor Thomas Hamilton also praised the quick work of officers and the role residents played in helping investigators move swiftly.

โ€œThis was an exemplary team effort by our officers and the community residents. We successfully apprehended the individual in under a week. Discharging a firearm in a residential area is reckless,โ€ Hamilton said. โ€œI would like to extend my gratitude to the officers and residents for their collaborative efforts.โ€

The chief also thanked residents who came forward with information, calling their cooperation a key part of the investigation.

โ€œThe safety and well-being of our citizens remain our highest priority,โ€ Richardson said. โ€œWe take every incident seriously and remain steadfast in our commitment to addressing criminal activity.โ€

Police have not released additional details about the suspect as the case moves forward.
