MONCKS CORNER, S.C.–According to Moncks Corner Police, officers have arrested a student for bringing a loaded handgun to school.
Authorities say they received information from another student who saw him in possession of the gun the previous day.
School Resource officers immediately removed the student from Berkeley High School where he attends.
A search of his book bag revealed a loaded 357 revolver.
The student is charged with Possession of a Firearm on School Property, Unlawful Possession of a Firearm and Disturbing Schools and will remain in custody until he is placed into the custody of the Department of Juvenile Justice. His name will not be released due to his age. The student gave no indication that he planned to use the weapon.
The firearm has not been reported stolen and detectives are continuing to investigate how the student obtained the weapon.
Additional officers have been temporarily assigned to the school.
Shortly after the incident, the Berkeley County School District issued the following statement:
“BCSD appreciates the cooperation and support of the students who are helping to keep our schools safe. BCSD asks that parents continue to encourage their children to report any concerns to their school administration,” stated Spokesperson Katie Orvin. “The safety of our students and staff is our number one priority, and we take action, according to policies already in place, to ensure their safety at all times.”
