New Hanahan library branch opens to the public

HANAHAN, S.C.–The new Hanahan Library branch celebrated its grand opening Sunday.  The brand new 6,700 square foot library replaces the old branch previously located in Yeamans Hall Plaza.

“A new library in Hanahan has been needed for a long time,” said Berkeley Co. Supervisor, Dan Davis.  “The library has been located in less than ideal, not easily accessible locations. Berkeley County Council was committed to making this new library a reality. It is a beautiful, state-of-the-art facility with plenty of parking.”

According to Davis, libraries remain an invaluable and essential community resources.

A study released by the Pew Research Center in December 2013 stated ‘Americans strongly value the role of public libraries in their communities, both for providing access to materials and resources and for promoting literacy and improving the overall quality of life.'”

The Berkeley County Government’s Capital Improvement fund made this new library possible. A few of the new library’s features include:

  • 20 computers and 3 laptops for public use
  • Wireless internet access
  • Its own parking lot with 30-plus parking spaces
  • Children’s story time area
  • Separate room for teens
  • One-point checkout and reference service
  • Special computer areas for children and teens
  • Community meeting space and kitchen area
  • One small conference room and two study rooms

The new library’s business hours are Monday through Thursday from 10AM to 7PM and Friday and Saturday from 10AM to 5PM.
