According to Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office, the handgun, a semi-automatic, belonged to the boy’s mother. He told deputies that his mother had no knowledge of him taking the weapon from her.

Investigators say the boy’s intentions are still unclear but say it might be in response to an earlier dispute between the boy and an older classmate.

Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office reported that Deputy Gary Lipsey, the school’s peace officer,  responded to a tip earlier in the day from a relative of a student who may or may not have been the boy’s target.

While detained, deputies say the boy admitted that he and a 14-year-old classmate had an altercation, and he was carrying the gun for self-protection.

Luckily, no students were harmed.

The student has been charged with possession of a firearm on school property and with making threats.  He is currently in custody at the Department of Juvenile Justice in Columbia.
