BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.—Since the now former Berkeley Co. Sheriff Wayne DeWitt announced his resignation from office, area lawmakers are now asking Nikki Haley to appoint a retired SLED agent to run the sheriff’s office.

He is 59-year-old Calvitt “Chab” Clarke.

Clarke is reportedly well-known around the Statehouse and also served on the security detail of former Lt. Gov. Glenn McConnell, who is now president of the College of Charleston.

“His character is beyond reproach,” Campbell told The Post & Courier.

According to Senator Larry Grooms, he and four other senators representing Berkeley County submitted Clarke’s name to the Governor’s Office on Wednesday—the same day DeWitt announced he was stepping down.

Grooms stated that he and other members of the county Senate delegation wanted to find someone who would be a “caretaker” for the position.

“The governor has been consistent in putting caretakers in those positions, and Chab would do a good job and would only do it for a short time,” Grooms told the paper. “There’s no guarantee Haley will approve the recommendation.”

Grooms told Live 5 News that Clarke would not run for sheriff and would eventually hand control of the department to the next elected sheriff.

Currently, Chief Deputy Rick Ollic has been filling the role of interim sheriff.

A special election will be scheduled for a permanent replacement.

At this time, it’s not known if Haley will act on that recommendation.
