PRESS RELEASE VIA DERRICK BURBAGE CAMPAIGN:

BERKLEY COUNTY, S.C.–Berkeley County Sheriff petition candidate Derrick Burbage fell short, obtaining just over 2,800 of the 5,313 required signatures prior to the noon deadline on April 10th.

Since this is a Special Election resulting from the resignation of former Sheriff Wayne Dewitt following his DUI arrest, Burbage had only 39 days to collect the required signatures.

During a normal election cycle, a petition candidate would have a year or more to obtain the necessary signatures.

Burbage stated “I’m proud of what we accomplished in such a short period of time, but feel as if I’ve let down my community by not giving them another option on the June ballot.”

Burbage, a former State Trooper, Charleston County Deputy and Afghanistan Police Advisor, says that he will continue to meet with the community and share his vision and plan for a better Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office.

He believes that “with this many signatures in only 39 days and the feedback received from Berkeley County voters, it’s clear that they want another candidate to choose from.”

Voters will have the opportunity to choose a Republican candidate in the upcoming April 21 primary.

Depending on the outcome of the primary, Burbage stated he will “evaluate the results and consider a possible write-in campaign to ensure voters have the best options to choose from on June 9th.”
