9-1-1 Calls Released from Shooting Involving Cpl. Kimber Gist


9-1-1 call BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–At 12:25 a.m. on February 26th, 2016โ€”Cpl. Kimber Gist spots a suspicious vehicle behind the Food Lion on Redbank Road and radios it in.

โ€œCentral, 144โ€”10-38 (suspicious vehicle),โ€ Gist tells dispatchers. โ€œFood Lion parking lot, paper tags.โ€

Approximately, 15 minutes later she notifies dispatchers that she has one person in custody before trouble ensues.

โ€œ10-10!โ€ sheโ€™s heard telling dispatchers.

โ€œDid she just say 10-10 (fight)?โ€ a dispatcher says.

Right after that, another deputy asks dispatchers of Gistโ€™s location.

โ€œI got her at Food Lion at 1316 Redbank Road,โ€ the dispatcher states.

Dispatcher repeatedly radio Gist to find out if sheโ€™s okay, however, she does not respond. Shortly after, a woman by the name of Christine Touchberry dials 9-1-1.

โ€œIโ€™ve got an officer here. She was shot, Officer 144. Harbour Lake Drive,โ€ she states.

โ€œYou said sheโ€™s shot?โ€ the dispatcher asks.

Touchberry responds that other deputies are now pursuing the person, later identified as Travis Smith, who shot her.

โ€œIโ€™ve got my hazards on and itโ€™s blocking the roadway,โ€ Touchberry tells dispatchers.

Cpl. Gistย was wearing body armor and was shot 8 times. She continues to recover from her injuries at Trident Hospital.
