Pedestrian Fatally Struck By Vehicle In St. Stephen Identified

ST. STEPHEN, S.C. – The Berkeley County Coroner’s Office has identified the pedestrian killed in St. Stephen on New Year’s Day.

Coroner Darnell Hartwell said the victim is Sherifdeen Aigoro, 40, of St. Stephen.

“The Berkeley County Coroner’s Office was notified on Monday at 10:09 pm of an auto versus pedestrian collision on North Highway 52 in Saint Stephen,” Hartwell said in a news release.

According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, Aigoro was walking east on U.S. Highway 52 near Peru Road just before 10 p.m. when the driver of a 2017 Nissan sedan, who was also traveling in the same direction, struck Aigoro.

The driver was not injured and was the only person inside the car at the time of the crash, Trooper Nick Pye said.

Aigoro was pronounced dead on the scene from injuries sustained from the collision. 

Berkeley County EMS, the Berkeley County Sherriff’s Office and North Berkeley Fire & Rescue responded to the incident. 

The Berkeley County Coroner’s Office and the South Carolina Highway Patrol are investigating.
