BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. — When disaster strikes, the Berkeley County Library System (BCLS) wants you to be ready.
BCLS has rolled out a new “Disaster Preparedness and Recovery Resources” initiative, packed with tools to help residents prepare for emergencies and recover faster. Whether you’re gathering important documents, filing insurance claims, or just trying to reconnect with family, the library is here to help — no library card needed for many services.
“We’re proud to offer the community a one-stop shop for disaster readiness and recovery,” said BCLS Director Gene Brunson. “Access to information and essential tools can make all the difference when preparing for or recovering from an emergency.”

Through a partnership with Berkeley County Emergency Management, nonprofit organizations, and other community partners, BCLS aims to make disaster preparedness easier and more accessible for everyone.
Here’s what residents can access through the Berkeley County Library System:
- Printing, Copying, Scanning, and Faxing Services: Essential for securing important paperwork. (No library card required!)
- Public Computers, Internet, and Wi-Fi: Stay connected to family, access critical websites, and manage recovery efforts. (Guest Internet Library Cards available.)
- Mobile Hotspots with LTE Data: Borrow a hotspot for Internet access — connect up to 10 devices. (Library card required.)
- Meeting, Conference, and Study Spaces: Private spaces to meet with insurance agents and recovery representatives.
- Digital Newspapers: Stay informed with local and national coverage for insurance claims and historical documentation. (Library card required.)
- Arts and Crafts Programs: Free stress-busting activities for kids and adults. (No library card required.)
- Coloring and Activity Sheets: Help little ones relieve stress and inspire creativity during tough times. (No library card required.)
The BCLS team encourages the community to stop by any library branch to take advantage of these free resources. Preparing now can save headaches — and heartaches — later. You can also explore all BCLS programs and events at berkeleylibrarysc.libcal.com.
