BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. – For the second time in eight days, another loaded gun has been found at a Berkeley County school.
According to the Berkeley County School District, administrators and a school resource officer at Sangaree Middle School received information around 1 p.m. Wednesday that a student may have had a gun on campus.
School leadership ultimately searched two students with the school resource officer present, the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office confirmed. During the search, a loaded SIG Sauer P229 handgun was recovered.
“It was determined that both juveniles, ages 13 and 14, had possession of the firearm at different times during the school day while inside the school,” Cpl. Carli Carr said.
In a message to parents, the school district said it’s following procedures as outlined by its policies to address the matter as well as working closely with law enforcement.

“As safety and security is our highest priority, we take all reports concerning safety seriously. Please continue to encourage your children to report any concerns they may have to a staff member, so we can take the appropriate steps to maintain a secure environment on our campus. We appreciate the cooperation and support of everyone who is helping to keep our school safe,” the district also wrote.
The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office is actively investigating the incident in coordination with school officials.
“Disciplinary actions are being taken in accordance with school policy, and criminal charges will be pursued. Both juveniles will be charged with possession of a weapon on school grounds and possession of a handgun by a person under the age of 18,” Carr added.
In a separate incident, on Tuesday, April 29, Berkeley County deputies confirmed they arrested an 18-year-old student at Philip Simmons High School after they said he brought a loaded gun to school.
Jaiden Anderson, of Martha Lane in Huger, was charged with possession of a firearm on school property and possession of a stolen firearm. Authorities said the gun, which had one round chambered, was discovered in Anderson’s bookbag along with an extended magazine.
