BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. – Retired North Charleston police officer Brian Adams is running for the S.C. District 44 senate seat soon to be left vacant by Paul Campbell, who has chosen not to seek re-election.

Adams first entered the political spotlight in 2014 when he ran against longtime Berkeley County Sheriff Wayne DeWitt. Although DeWitt ultimately won the election and remained sheriff, it was short-lived. He resigned from his position not long after his DUI arrest in 2015. Another election was held, and Duane Lewis took office as the county’s latest sheriff.

Adams began his career as a volunteer firefighter and retired after 25 years as a North Charleston police officer. Despite his retirement as a first responder, he said he hopes to now serve the community in a different capacity.

“In my retirement, protect and serve will now have a new method, with the same meaning, and it will be done with the same commitment – Protecting citizens’ rights, liberties, freedoms, and sincere community service,” Adams said in a news release.

Adams, who is running as a Republican, said he plans to work with the community and the legislature to fight for the passage of Constitutional Carry, Medical Cannabis, and protection for the unborn. He said he also believes in less government, lower taxes and fiscal responsibility. Regarding education, he believes teachers deserve the resources they need and families deserve the choice that works best for them.

“My commitment to the citizens of District 44 is to be accessible, responsive and honest. My votes will reflect Republican values, your values. It is an honor to serve, and I will treat that honor with the respect that it deserves.”
